da betcris: Everton fans must dread every transfer deadline day with the prospect of some of their best players leaving the club mixed with the unlikely possibility of any new signings arriving at Goodison Park. For as long as I can remember Mikel Arteta to Arsenal has been a rumour that has not gone away, especially on deadline day, but this year it proved to be more than just a gossip as after a late bid was accepted by Everton and after Arsenal came back with improved terms for the Spaniard, the 29-year-old finally left the club after six years of dedicated service and over 200 appearances.
Everton fans may have been expecting a replacement to have been sorted out in the impending hours after Areta was sold but nothing was agreed and instead the only new arrivals were Royston Drenthe on loan from Real Madrid and an unknown quantity in last season’s top goalscorer in the Argentinean league, Denis Stracqualursi.
The person to blame for the club not being able to replace Arteta is the Spaniard who demanded a transfer after he heard about Arsenal late interest. If Arteta had been sold towards the start of the transfer window, or even just a few days earlier, it would had given the club some time to consider a potential reinvestment of the money. However, with Mikel handing in a transfer request just moments before the deadline approached, David Moyes was left in a difficult situation. We will never know if Moyes would have been given the chance to bring in someone new, but all the same you have to feel sorry for the Blues’ boss as he’s pretty much had his hands tied behind his back this window.

David Moyes must have been pulling his hair out after the club sold one of his one remaining influential players on the deadline making it near impossible to replace him. Selling a player for £10 million who has been badly affected by injuries in recent years was always going to be an attractive proposition for Everton. However it wasn’t just letting Arteta leave that has really annoyed Toffees’ fans.
It was the fact that the club also sold Ayegbeni Yakubu to Blackburn and Jermaine Beckford to Championship side Leicester City without replacing either of them, leaving the club desperately short of strikers. Beckford, who has had his critics during his time at Goodison Park, scored a respectable 10 goals in the Premier League last term and the team will certainly miss his contribution upfront although probably not his many missed chances. While Yakubu has looked a shadow of his former self in recent years but he probably could have still have added to the side.
I don’t think that Moyes deserves to be involved in the current situation after constantly delivering a top-ten finish to the side despite only having a minimal budget in comparison to smaller teams like Sunderland. If the club fails to back him with money for the rest of this season I could definitely see this being Moyes last in charge of the club.
If The Toffees struggle to get going before Christmas then the situation could get even worse as more of their best players may be tempted by moves away in the January transfer window, which could prove to be the last straw for Moyes. I expect Landon Donavan to return to the club in January after the end of the MLS season after his hugely successful spell last time at Goodison Park and I also have the feeling that the club may take advantage of the opening of the loan window this week by bringing a few much-needed new faces to Merseyside. By taking Arsenal’s late offer for Arteta they have left themselves vulnerable to struggling with a lack of threat up-front. It is possible that young Jack Rodwell is capable of stepping up and taking on Arteta’s role for the team but he will need to display some of the form he had when he first burst onto the scene three year ago.
After the recent departures the club look dangerously short in the attacking area of the pitch and when the 25-man squads were announced last week Everton could only name 18 first-team players, seemingly a worrying indictment of their current position.
