da bwin: As reported by The Daily Mail, Brendan Rodgers is still hoping to make what he describes as Celtic’s best signing this season.
What’s the story?
da bet sport: As we discussed last week, Craig Gordon was the subject of heavy interest from Chelsea in the last week of the transfer window but Celtic held firm and told the English league leaders he wasn’t for sale.
Now Brendan Rodgers is hoping to take that a step further and sign Gordon up to a new contract. The Mail reports the Celtic boss has privately reaffirmed his commitment to retaining the keeper to the player himself.
Quoted by the paper, Rodgers said:
I have reassured him he is an absolutely massive part of what I am doing here. You see the level of his game, his composure, his quality. I’m very hopeful that very, very soon we will tie him down for longer here. Getting Craig on a new contract will be our best signing once it is done.
That’s sure to be music to Celtic supporters’ ears who have come to appreciate just how vital the Scottish international is to the Hoops’ defensive record.
How big has his contribution been?
Celtic have made a massive thirteen clean sheets in the league this season and Craig Gordon has been a massive part of that. Always considered to be an excellent shot stopper, he’s added new elements to his game under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, despite being 34 years of age.
He can now be a massive part of Celtic’s possession game, never more comfortable at any point in his career than right now in distributing the football with his feet.
It’s something you can clearly see he’s worked hard on this season and to his credit has forced his way back into Rodgers plans after it looked like the new boss may favour Dorus de Vries.
He’s been a massive part of Celtic’s success over the last few years, making 140 appearances in just two and a half seasons.
Now with Rodgers’ recent comments, the Celtic Park faithful can look forward to many more between the sticks for their team.
