da heads bet: Southampton appointed Ralph Hasenhuttl as their new manager on Wednesday, and the deal is particularly exciting news for Saints midfielder Mario Lemina.
What’s the word, then?
Well, having dismissed Mark Hughes on Monday following a run of 10 Premier League matches without a win and just a single one all season, the south coast outfit have reverted back to taking a risk on a coach that has never managed in England before.
The 51-year-old arrives at St Mary’s with decent pedigree however following his success with FC Ingolstadt and RB Leipzig, whom he led to second and sixth-place finishes respectively in the Bundesliga before leaving at the end of the previous campaign.
Hasenhuttl’s preferred formation and style has been a 4-2-2-2 system with the players expected to press and produce high energy levels, and he will hope that he can have a similar set-up at Southampton with the stars he has inherited.
What does it mean for Lemina?
When you read up on Hasenhuttl’s tactics and his success in the past – and especially at Leipzig – it appears that the Gabon international could benefit the most from the arrival of the Austrian.
The 25-year-old is clearly a talented player who can take opponents on and beat them using his speed, power and skill, and he is remarkably similar in that respect to another play who earned his big-money move to the Premier League in Naby Keita.
The Liverpool star added goals and assists to his name under the tutelage of Hassenhuttl at Leipzig to earn a big-money £48m exit, and if Lemina can do the same in the 4-2-2-2 formation then there is no doubt that he can be valued at that fee, or perhaps even more given the clear ability that he has.
